A lightened version of the ZODIAC CH 601 HD, the basic CH 601 model was developed specifically for the Advanced Ultralight (AULA) category in Canada and other European countries, where the CH 601 can be used as a trainer and personal aircraft. An Advanced Ultralight category is really more than an ultralight - it would be better described as a primary aircraft category.

With a reduced gross weight, this model's specifications are very similar to those of the CH 601 HD model. With a lighter gross weight (useful load), a lower empty weight is achieved using lighter materials in selected areas.
Registered as an advanced ultralight, the basic CH 601 makes an ideal low-cost trainer and personal aircraft. As a certified design, factory pre-assembled aircraft are available direct from the manufacturer.

Engine Limitations: 65 - 100 hp, up to 225 lbs. installed. Alternative engines will affect performance, specifications and flight characteristics of the aircraft. Also, the weight and balance of the aircraft may be adversely affected by alternative engines, and the original fuel system may not be adequate or suitable for some engines. Most alternative engines will require a custom engine mount and engine cowl. Zenith Aircraft Company does not manufacture or directly support engines.

A local (South African) 601UL, this is the Raven version. The main difference is the canopy.

Here is a local Raven parked next to my Rans S12 at the 2007 EAA Fun&Sun meet, was that a sign of things to come ?
